While I try to fend off falling into some bad habits of mine, I’ve been working on and off on this new Fall of Cybertron Shockwave picture.  Decided to try painting without a lineart this time because I’d hoped it would end up being a faster process. So far, I’m not sure about that.

Geez, this guy’s arms are going to be a nightmare to render. I’m not looking forward to that.

Oh well, we’ll have to see how this goes. I trust you’ll support me in this endeavour, Blog? (PS: You had better.)

All of this is awkward repost from my tumblr:

Hey Tumblr,
Remember when I had other fandoms besides Transformers? Yeah, me neither. However, it turns out other people do. I told Plurk I'd work on some fanart for the first (couple) fandom(s) of mine people listed and this was one of them.

Blame Sharn and Expo for this. Also Winzler. In fact, this WIP is only uploaded because Winzler told me to.

ANYWAY, ENJOY YOUR NOT-TERRIBLY-ORIGINAL fanart. The ghost is angry because they left candy all over the floor.

More WIPS, and this time from the expected fandom. Here's the second set from that Plurk draw I did, where I said I'd make some fanart for the first fandom(s) listed.
  1. Drift from MTMTE with something to show you.
  2.
  3. This was for a game where we (me and my mates) were supposed to colour over this Fall of Cybertron Shockwave toy for lighting practice and then show each other... Turns out that in the wee hours of the morning, I have really poor reading comprehension and at some point between 2 and 3 AM ... the rules got lost and I just started making shit up.
  4.
  5. Oops.
I plan to finish both of these. ... And oh look, it is 1: 50 AM over here, and I bet, if I were to follow historical trends... that I'm not making too much sense right now. OH WELL. TOO BAD. If I have to suffer looking at these WIPs on my desktop SO DO YOU.

I'm sorry.

Well, you know the drill by now, Blog. I get one image done, and then I find a whole bunch more on an old external hardrive that are tantalizing work in progresses. What? Don’t look at me like that. You know how I strive — often to counter-intuitive heights — for the feeling of completion and hard drive tidiness.  Besides, how am I expected to resist  something where half the work is already done for me?

I think I did this linework’ two years ago as part of a set. This is my Cheerleading Fairy of Optimism. She was probably supposed to have wings, but it’s very possible I was overdosing on cutesy girly imagery at the time, and just couldn’t bring myself to include them in the final ‘inks’.  I’d forgotten I’d ever drawn hair like that, and it’s kinda nice. Anyway, I’m hoping that putting this little lady up on the Blog will motivate me to A) finish her B) finish the ugly-ass sketch of her partner. By the way, the absurd idea of a ‘Cheerleading Optimist Fairy’ came from a tiny comic I’d done years and years and years ago over here.

Sob, Blog. Why can’t the hard parts be done by other people? Anatomy is so difficult and I don’t wannaaaa. You finish the sketch, Blog, I just want to colour.

Yeah, okay, I’ll stop whining and go get things done. Glad we had this talk. You’re the best.

+1 image to the work in progress category.

I am so partied out this weekend, Blog. But fear not, I didn’t forget my promise to you. I’d NEVER forget my promises to you. Anyway, here are  some closeups of my favourite portions of that commision from the last post. I learned and experimented a lot with not just line weights but also trying to add the feeling of texture to my inks too.

For example, I liked the way I did the hair on Chris’s forearms here, and I’m pretty fond of how I did his head-hair too. Also, I’m kind of liking the little crow’s feet I gave him, and the way his stubble fades off into his skin. (That can’t possibly be the right way to describe that)

Under the cut is the step-by-step and a couple other choice closeups. What’s that? Hey now, Blog, watch yourself. There is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with being proud of myself and some of the things I’ve done. If anything, you should me proud of me.

Remember all those WIPs I was posting a while back for that lineart commission I was doing, Blog? Well you lucky little thing, you,  you get the honour of being he first to see the completed piece in all its glory. (Yeah, okay, you got me, Blog, I really just forgot to upload this when I finished it, BUT THAT SHOULDN’T MATTER).

Character and Commission belong to the very fine lady over here.

Originally this was just supposed to be a quick little sketch commission, but like I said, HypotheticalWoman is a very fine lady, and I just couldn’t help myself. I ended up upgrading the sketch into full inks. This meant that she lost out on the sketched background (something I don’t do on my sketch commissions anymore) but then since I’m so taken with her, I slapped on a quick freebie of one anyway. I’m also mailing out a printed version of this to her door — again, something I don’t usually do, but she’s a truly great person and deserves it.

As for the character himself, his name is Chris. As you can see, he’s a centaur, but what I like about this guy is that he’s got more of a stocky workhorse kind of build (and personality). I loved that he wasn’t supposed to be one of those willowy, pretty-boy horsemen, but an honest-to-goodness tough nut that can be driven hard, and works harder. Seriously, this character is a tanner; that’s super baddass (and unique) when you look at what type of ‘person’ he is. Still, Chris isn’t supposed to be exceptionally pretty, and I tried to make his face a little longer and a little more … horse-y. Normally he wears a tunic, and his hair’s in a long braid and a mohawk sort of thing, but since he’s so rugged, I decided to let us catch him taking a little me-time. So here he is with his hair let down and his clothes are drying on a handy tree branch off stage left.

Hey now, don’t look at me like that, Blog.  Even fantasy folk have to do their laundry too.

The next post will a quick step-by-step compilation of this image and also some closeups of this guy since I’m just that proud of this inking job (and also because I have to run off to a party 5 minutes ago).

Remember when I said I’d done another version of this picture, well, here it is. This isn’t perfect, mind you, but this had been an effort to speed up my illustration process so I decided to leave things a little rough around the edges. I also thought the previous image was maybe a little too sombre, so why not liven things up a little? Not to mention the fact that Canada has entered full on winter mode all up in here and I figured a change of pace was in order. Time to bust out those summer colours!

Let’s see Autumn off with a bang! The kind that sounds like a rivet gun through a window and into a skull.

Don’t have much else to add except this is probably the first illustrative transparent .png I’ve ever done. Looks like I can cross THAT off my bucket list finally. Phew, lucky me.

Blog, you know how I have that bad habit and sometimes when when people hold still long enough, I accidentally draw all over them? Well, it happened again.  There’s more photos under the cut.

You’ve got the power, Blog.
The power to make art. Art and really bad references to good songs.

Actually, the art is pretty bad too. Well okay, slightly above mediocre — but that’s just because I’m being charitable.

Still, I can’t help but have a soft spot for this silly picture; and before you ask, yes. Yes, that is a platypus with broccoli growing on it. Also, yes, I did misspell ‘broccoli.’ What are you gonna do about it? Laugh?  Are you going to laugh at me, Blog? Choose your next move wisely, and don’t think I can’t see that smirk. But remember, Blog, which of the two of us is it that brings home the bacon, snouts, and pork knuckles? That’s what I thought.

Back on track though (or at least as on track as you can be when the subject is a broccoli-Playpus) I did this solely using touchpad and this vague notion of having absolutely no idea what I was doing with myself. I thiiink I was taking random prompts and that’s what’s to blame for this absolutely off the wall mash-up , but then it was done a year or so ago, so I can’t say with absolutely confidence. Not that it matters, ultimately.

Just like tattoos are suppose to represent where you were at a very specific moment of your life, I like to imagine this was…. oh who am I kidding, this was probably some really bizarre call for a very specific type of help.   I can’t think of any alternative.

No really, this isn’t a joke. You’ve got quite a lot of explaining to do — about a lot of things, actually. But foremost, I want you to tell me why you have this old image uploaded into your archives. I was going through your things while you were out — no shut up, this isn’t about me, this is about YOU. Don’t try to change the subject.

How long have you even had this, and more importantly: why? By the way, Blog, the correct answer is: “because of the baby bunny,” and NOT: “because of the young lady (who thought a red blouse, red shorts, and a blue cap was a good idea for jog-wear)”.

The former is vaguely excusable. The latter, creepy as anything, so cut it out.

But seriously, what is even going on in this photo? Why am I scowling at a tiny rabbit while in the third-worst outfit imaginable?

I can only assume it is because I hated small, precious animals. Or the more likely scenario; because I’m just so innately awkward. Yeah, that’s just the way we roll around. You best respect.

Ugh. I see what you did there, Blog. Trying to distract me, eh? Well it won’t work this time! Mark my words, Blog, I’m going to keep going through your stuff and I better not find anymore images of young girls.

This is just getting weird.

Oh wow, Blog. Why didn’t you tell me how dusty your fanart section was getting? I would’ve helped you out or something. I mean, that’s what absent minded, missing friends are for, right?

But seriously, I just took a look at your fanart section and I’m kind of embarrassed for you. Has it really been that long since we’ve uploaded something there? And how about those Transformers eh?  Never in my life did I think I was going to like anything about the franchise, but backtrack to last January and oops, I think I fell in amour. And I fell hard.

Speaking of amour, or rather her opposite: Spiting Abhorrence, I can’t tell if I actually hate this image or not. It started out as a shoddy little work doodle that digivolved into something I’d planned to use as a 100 x 100 icon… and at some point this started to happen, and I was powerless to stop it. Around that time I made 3 goals for myself because if this was going to grow into a quasi-finished image, then by golly I was going to accomplish something else along the way.

Goals:

  1. Finally figure out how to cell shade (because this was going to be a quick image, and that’s quick colouring… right? Right?) [FAILED]
  2. Actually get an icon out of this image since that was kind of the point [FAILED]
  3. Learn to use Paint Tool Sai [A+]

Oh well. 1 out of a 3 ain’t bad. Why, if you squint and round up, that’s practically half! In any case, I’ve done a different version of this picture and it’s possible I find it a lot less cranky-inducing. In fact, you could almost say it was passable. And if we’re being really generous here, Blog, you could even be so bold as to say that I actually almost like the other version.

If you’re good, maybe I’ll let you see it.

I believe that it’s only proper manners to let your commissioner know how their commission is progressing.  This extends to anything I’m doing of commission quality.

Bloke’s nearly done, I’m thinking. Hooray.

And don’t worry, Blog, I haven’t forgotten you. But school’s starting, and things’ll be a little frantic for a bit.

Rung, honey, baby bolts, you should uh, really see somebody about those head insides of yours that are kind of… falling out your outsides.

And once again we see my attempt to learn coloured cellshading failing horribly. Also, where did that upper torso come from? That wasn’t supposed to be there either…

Dear hands,

Please start doing what I want you to.

Thanks.

Love,
MmeJack

Which is to say, I don’t know anything.

Help.
Help.
What am I doing?

Help.

I don’t know what I’m doing.

To be fair though, I am pretty ace at backgrounds as you can clearly see.

Hey, uh, Blog… there’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you. Y’see, me and the guys couldn’t help but notice that lately you’ve gotten this … propensity of posting pics of … dudes with mangled faces. And while it’s all fine and good, and totally normal for everyone to have a thing, well…. we’re getting a little worried about you. This is beginning to look a bit like you’ve got a problem…

No, Blog, No. Put down the ax, Blog. Just put it down and step away from the– NO, BLOG, NO.
NO.

NO.

In other news, I think I really like Transformers now. So here’s a couple awkward sketches of a really sweet, mild mannered robot psychologist who accidentally gets his head blown off, in a really tragic turn of events from a really fabulous comic. I’ve already got a coloured version in the works, but note to self: fix this bloke’s eyes and give the poor guy some shoulders or something. Alas, I guess this is what happens when you sketch in pen, what with that whole no-erase quality it’s got going on. You live and you learn, I guess. TOO BAD I DON’T SEEM TO EVER LEARN.

wist: (Bouncing dots)

You know what, Blog? I know you really like that look, but you’ve been wearing that same thing since June 10th and honestly, you’re making me a little uncomfortable. Time to change out of that and put on something new. Or at least something that doesn’t look that gross. Or smell… I mean really, Blog. Have you even put that in the laundry at all… you know what? Forget I asked.

What I’m trying to say here is that I’ve gotten tired of looking at that sad colour-spot-test thing that’s been haunting my most recent post page. Also, I’m embarrassed by how awkward it is, even if it is just a WIP.  So to flush out the bad, here’s the much nicer looking sketchy until I have time to actually colour this properly.

I also mentioned in the last post that I was waffling between making Rinzler tall or short. I wasn’t joking about having gotten a more refined sketch of tiny!Rinzler, and while he looks fine (barring a few anatomy issues I’ll have to fix up) he just doesn’t look as striking as tall!Rinzler. Also, with Uprsing’s crazy stretched out insanely awkwardly tall anatomy going on, maybe tall is the right way to go? Even though this picture is dated July 2011, I’m so slow at art, that by now, there’s already been at least 3+ similar themed Tron fanarts floating around. I’ll admit I’ve been a little nervous to continue working on this for fear that someone’ll jump out of a bush and call me a dreaded ‘idea-stealer.’ What I think I need to do here, Blog, is remind myself that ALL ideas have already been done, flip my hair over my shoulder, and just do what I want. I still might need you to hold my hand though, Blog. You know, for reasons.

PS: that red elbow-y sort of thing that’s going on in the left side there was my sketch for a matching Ram who I’d also put in a suit. These two were supposed to be based off an AU from the 60′s where they were both varying degrees of detectives. Unfortunately that endeavour kind of lost steam, so it’ll just be Rinzler in the end that’ll get completed. Once upon a time, I had a Clu in there too. Oh well, at least I’ve a better chance of finishing this now.

Hey Blog, this is what you get for taking forever at doing your art. Sure, “concentrate on real life,” they said, “it’ll be a good, idea” they said; “you’ll thank us later when you’re able to pay your bills.” Yeah, well, THANKS FOR NOTHING, Practical Advice. You get all tangled up with school, work, and sig figs, and next thing you know a new television show has come out, and unless you can finagle your picture done before a couple more canon reveals, all your fanwork won’t make any sense.

That’s what you get for trying to take care of business, Blog. Leave it to you to take care of exactly the wrong business.

And speaking of business, let’s talk funny business. Namely the funny business of Bruce Boxleitner be Tron be Rinzler be Anis Cheurfa and their distinctly wavering heights. Originally I was going to draw short Legacy Rinzler, but the sketch came out 80′s Tron tall. I’ve got a more refined sketch of the bloke with a smaller stature, but given how lanky everyone is in Uprising (which I still haven’t watched) I wonder if I should retool this guy to be somewhat less short?

Oh hey Blog, looks like my life is this continuous cycle of  never having time to do art but when I do, then having to send off my glitchy computers for fixing. And by fixing I mean the tech people will give it a cursory look over and then shake their heads sadly. But enough about me, Blog, let’s talk about you.

I can’t help but notice that your latest entry (this) is sporting a new WIP. I also can’t help but notice that it was for a picture you said you’d do for someone, what, roughly two years ago? Anyway, nice to see you’re still at that. Even if, you know, your timing is kind of embarrassingly  horrible.
