Remember the WIP I was working on way back in this post? Well after rage quitting and then moping around for 3 months because of a variety of reasons including saving over the original PSD with a lossy .JPG file, I finally found the time to finish it.

This is a gift along with this fic for the artist of the original lines.  In the next post I’ll link the tutorial and the couple of animations I did with this guy.

Remember the sketch I did back here?

Well here are the two main colour schemes I’m waffling between. Do I pick creepy, pale and sickly looking? Or creepy and ethically ambiguous? I’m torn between the two, but leaning more towards Pasty there on the right, since Primeverse Starscream is the palest and greyest of all mechs in the series so far.

Ps: gosh I’m on the edge of my seat with this show, and wondering how they’re going to end up balancing Starscream’s badass moments with his overwhelming patheticness.

Anyway, I could sure do with a vote on what colours looks best.

It’s finally done! FINALLY!

I present to you: Melonboat McSlices. Even though this didn’t turn out the way I had planned, I still think it’s kind of cute. Also, not bad for my first time using only the pen tool and the gradient tool.

(This picture is way more adorable when it’s squished horizontally, so I’ll leave it formatted the way it is. Click to see the original.)

This big guy is a combination between a:

+

+

+

=

So a : Shark + Watermelon + Venus Flytrap + Sundew (which is a gorgeous name actually)

Now I can finally move on to other things that pull at my conscious less.  One down, only 999,999,999 left to go! Yeah! We can do this, Blog! If we stick together and believe in the power of love, friendship, and forgoing the sweet embrace of sleep, we’ll be able to get ‘er done!! Onward and tally-ho (etc etc)!

Or maybe we all just like Loud Noises, I dunno.

Oh look, a picture of a giant robot who is neither very giant NOR a robot. Welp, so much for my first Transformers fanart being very true to the series. Anyway, trying my hand at drawing Primeverse Starscream as a human because no matter how hard it is to render people, they’re still easier than big metal alien men. Humans  in general also require less rulers to draw, and let’s not even talk about me and vehicles (or vehicle-people for that matter).

Other people!formers I ‘ve got on the go right now include:

  • Slipstream (TFA)
  • Megatron
  •  Bumblebee
  •  Arcee
  • Soundwave
  • Knock Out
  • Breakdown
  • Airachnid

I wanted to draw Ratchet (and still might if I can think of an outfit for him) but Bulkhead, and Optimus are giving me trouble. Optimus especially since his helmet looks like a baseball cap and his … robot goatee and weird… three lines of ‘hair’ peeking out from under his ‘hat’ are all kind of tough to translate  into a person in my style.

By the way, I do have an entire outfit an actual pose that extends below Starscream’s neck but I’m currently caught up in trying to decide between two potential colour schemes. The spot colours are on tumblr, so I’ll upload them here pretty soon too.

I kind of feel like a tool with that last WIP sitting at the top of my blog since I’ve been working on this image every single day after posting that last entry. While my computer’s in for repairs I’m forced to use a friend’s, but I can only do so for 20 minute stints at a time. It’s rough ’cause I just want to get this done so I can finally mail it off. On the bright side I’m at the home stretch now, and the current file is sitting pretty much 97% done. Didn’t have that file on hand, so I’m just throwing this one up here. When I was at this stage it was probably around 78 % done.

Continuing the adventure of trying to quickly finish a drawing using only the pen tool and gradients. And what an adventure it is — an adventure in not shoving my hands into a blender! I can’t tell if it’s the fact that I only get to work on this ugly baby of mine toward 1 AM (since I need to borrow a photoshop capable computer — and it is hardly capable at that), or if it’s the unintuitive practice of using only the pen/gradient tool, or the most likely scenario; my sheer fumbly fail-ness that is making this so difficult. But whatever it is, this image — which was supposed to be a speedily done thing — is taking forever.

It certainly doesn’t help that I can’t figure out underwater lighting nor volume. Seriously, a shark should not be this difficult to map planes of light on. Sharks don’t even have that many wobbly, sticky-outy, finangly parts. I dunno what my problem is. (Like always, sleep dep. is an industry standard acceptable answer).

Oh, and PS: can you tell it is 5 AM? Because I can. I can just feel my coherency jumping out a window. Anyway, updated my WIP gallery with this guy, whined a bit, and gave you a quick touch base, my dear Blog. Now it’s off to bed with me, so we can have another lovely day full of awkward English, typos, and regrets tomorrow! Goodnight, my dear!

What it says on the tin. I accidentally saved a .PNG file over my working .PSD file, and now I’ve effectively got to paint over this, or start anew. Ah well, I will persevere for my art! Or you know, for someone else’s art. Namely that someone else is the ever fabulous infiniteviking who graciously let me slap some colours onto her already stunning lineart. I’m kind of down about losing all the work I’d done on this, but eh, what can you do? C’est la vie n’est-ce pas?

This is going to be part of an ADVENT CALENDAR EVENT I’m hosting, where every day of March for the first 11 days (or possibly the first 30 days if I can manage) I’m going to upload/gift a fandom related thing to someone (and in some cases, just straight up mail some lucky SOBs some tangible goods). Fandoms are going to be Tron and Transformers almost exclusively.  The above image is part of one person’s gift, and I’m hoping I can pretty it up (and re-relearn photoshop in the precess since idekwtf I’m doing at this point) in order to make it an acceptable present … since, y’know, I didn’t even do half the work.

See, Blog? I didn’t leave you again. We’re still here, and we’re gonna be okay. You can trust me for just a little while longer, Blog.  I’m not going anywhere, and I’m going to keep talking to you in this vaguely creepy fashion for a while yet, so you don’t need to worry. Everything’s going to be okay for a little bit longer. Relax and just watch this nice .gif I made for you. Shhh, just relax, shhhh.

Final image can be found here.

So I really like making animations apparently. I hope you guys don’t mind them too much, either. Ovbiously there’s considerable colour loss when things are shrunk down into .gifs, but overall, these are kind of neat, right? … Right guys?

Oh. Looks like it’s just you and me, Blog.

You’re all alone. With me.

.

In other news, pretty sure this makes me sound like a Blog predator or something. Hide yo’ tumblrs and dreamwidths. (Speaking of, I’ve ported my LJ over to DW, so you’re free to follow me there if you’ve got an account. Never fear though! I’ll still be hanging around LJ, and the updates will keep coming, but if you were part of the mass LJ exodus too, let’s be buddies and commiserate together. Also, anyone wanna be tumblr pals? Got me one (or three) of those.)

Oh hi, Blog, I didn’t see you there.  What’s that? You’ve been here all along? Well, I’m really sorry about tha–… and you’ve been standing there outside my window this entire time? Gee, Blog, I don’t know what to tell you. On one hand that’s just hella creepy, and you’ll never make any friends that way, but on the other hand I do sort of blame myself. I mean, I did tell you I’d let you into my heart that one time… roughly 4 months ago. I just can’t believe you’ve been waiting patiently out there this whole time. Man, lucky for you the weather’s been so mild this year, huh? What? No! I’m most certainly not making light of your situation! I’m just, well.

You know I actually am truly touched you waited me. Aw, don’t make that face. C’mere you, let’s hug it out.

And tell you what, kid, I’ll make a post right now, just for you. How’s that? It’ll have a picture and everything.  And who knows, if you keep up that marginally upsetting borderline stalker good behaviour,  maybe I’ll even have a post waiting for you tomorrow.

Now on to the less psychotic stuff that doesn’t imply I talk to all my needy street urchin friends this way good stuff.

Oh look. It’s my first finished picture of the year! I’d say this calls for a congratulatory nap, until you realise that I started this picture back in 2010. And oh look, I was promisingly my everlasting devotion to my Blog back then too. (It’s an annual thing, Blog understands, and Blog accepts me for who I am. Flighty airhead and all).  Anyway, I can’t take all the credit for the image since the lines were done by my pal, Mouse. This further compounds how sad it is that it took me two years to finish, since I didn’t even do half the work.

Here are her lines, by the way:

Yeah, it was inherently adorable. I had nothing to do with that.

On this day a bunch of years ago +1 I didn’t exist very much!

Thanks Mom and Dad! I enjoy being a person a lot! It is very interesting and being sentient is pretty neat.

Kind of worried about those tsunamis though.

Hey, so I made my first animation ever and am pretty proud even though it’s a little rusty around the edges:

Since it’s a .GIF file the colours aren’t so hot but I don’t care because LOOK MOVING PICTURES! I did that all by myself!

I also made a tutorial under the cut.

You should think about checking it out. I worked hard on it, and who knows, maybe I’ve done something right and you might even learn a thing… or one.

That’s a really nerdy (geeky?) title but don’t mind me, its 3 AM and I’m really set on making this post since I finally finished colouring this picture.

There’s probably a few things I could afford to fix on this, but for now I am most definitely calling it done.  Again, if you wanted to see the progress shots you can find them in previous posts here and here. I’m thinking of doing either a walk-through or a tutorial on how I painted this guy, anyone interested? Oh, and before someone feels inclined to give me more credit than I’m due, I should mention that I didn’t do the lines; Misterknife did [Warning, link is so very NSFW.]

I’m updating my blog and it is 2 in the morning. Surprise, surprise.

It’s now the next day and I’ve forgotten to publish my last night late night post. Surprise. Surprise.

In any case, now that I’m done that one tegaki adventure, I’m free to finish the other things I owe other people. This includes my colouring job on gimpy Shark Man here.

You might remember him from an earlier post, but I just wanted to update where I am on this guy. I also wanted to show the difference between my spot colours and my more finalized version(s).

I still need to add a second level of shadow to the skin, and I’m planning to add the volume to the scar tissue on another layer, so that’s why they still look kind of flat. I also need to do some skin highlights, but will probably keep that simple since I’m working with a low light environment.

The shadows are just one colour right now by the way, so I wonder if this is cell shading? Is it? I had wanted to do cell shading originally, but I’m not entirely sure if I got it right. Man, if I were a real artist I bet I would know these fancy definitions.

I gotta say too, that I tackled the skin first, not just because it helped me get a better idea of the light source, but also because looking up references on how to paint bruises/cuts/scar tissue got me some pretty terrifying nightmare fuel pictures. Edit: That might explain my actual nightmares last night. But I digress. The amount of inflation pornography that cropped up was surprising too.

And while I don’t have the greatest working knowledge of male any words anatomy and decided to MAKE IT UP AS I WENT, I really like how this turned out. There’s still a few shading inconsistencies I need to iron out, but this’s the first time I’ve tried rendering “realistic-ish” muscle mass and the final product isn’t half bad looking imho. I think a lot of the ease to which this happened is thanks to Mado’s ability to put lines in all the right places though. It’s worth noting too, that this character is supposed to have very smooth, almost dolphin-like skin, so that explains why my shadings so smooth looking.

Anyway, the way I see it, I can either now go do some homework or try to finish the skin for this guy. Guess which one I’m choosing? [winky-face-emote here]

PS: I’ve started an art reference tumblr. More on that later.

PPS: Today’s Pictures for Sad Children comic was AMAZING. So out of the blue, unexpected and synonymous with “awesome.”

Actually that title’s more than a little dramatic, but I’m feeling live a Diva, so indulge me.

I was introduced to tegaki sometime last year, and since then have managed to produce exactly two pictures.  One is this guy:

I’m normally pretty self conscious about this kind of thing, but why? Well, since I’ve got no answer that’s any good, I  guess I haven’t got any reason to be. So, indulging in both a little self-love and plenty of badly structured sentences, I present to you my tegaki avatar. That’s a rather accurate depiction of me, insofar as scribbles go, even though my hair’s a lot shorter than that right now. I also don’t have glowing dots circling around the back of my head, and usually lack a manifestation of the visual depiction of what I’m talking about too. I’m talking about plants by the way, if that wasn’t clear. I’m also sounding kind of like a tool but it’s okay; I’m a diva for at least 10 more minutes.

The next picture I can’t even explain but am going to try to do anyway, because one day I may want to know what I was smoking/ disillusioning myself with.

This is currently my first tegaki post, as well as what I hope will be my last. Though once I say this out loud, it means in about 2 months I’ll be selling my soul to the damn place. Curse you, self. You and your masochistic tendencies. Curse. You. Its not been a pleasant time for me. In fact, this person’s picture quite sums up the tegaki experience:

QQ on Tegaki E

While you’re clicking through links though, you should think about checking out some of the amazing artists that use that site. Seriously, there are some great things going on there.

You know what’s got me stumped these days?

This image.

Help me decide which version is the best please. I’ve looked at this so long, that my eyes are going cross. It doesn’t help that my laptop comes with all these zany screen colour defaults … with none being good for processing colour integrity.

If you don’t know which one you like best, at least tell me which you like the least please. That would be just as amazing.

Welp, looks like LJ's polling function won't work for me.

Thanks very much to anyone that can give me a hand anyway!

I am dying on my feet tired today and I’m not entirely sure why. Yesterday was super busy and quite an adventure with the dangerous as hell roads, (no, my mistake; when I said “roads,” I really meant ICY CHASMS OF DEATH) the business meetings, the business dinner, the business lunch, the parties and the mint tour, but these usually don’t tire me out this much even in conjunction. Furthermore, I’m pretty sure I went to sleep yesterday, so I have no right be this fatigued. Ah well, it’ll stay a mystery I guess.

Arble Garble, but I have so much stuff I need to get done this weekend and it’s already 1 AM. So instead of doing the smart thing like studying, working or getting me to bed, I’m going to prove I’m not a fibber.

I keep telling people I like photography and have been meaning to post up some of my experiments in the field for, well, years now. So, here goes. Links go to my new photography account on Deviant art.

2 WIPS

I was going to do some homework and then play some Mass Effect – not necessarily in that order – when my Xbox circle went three parts red. I decided to post some WIPs I’m working on and off on, instead.

Focus on the “off” part of that last sentence. Bah, I wish I had the time to work on this one more.

Started this last year, you can see the first WIP I did over here. You’ll notice the quality didn’t improve but the picture got bigger. Anyway, this gentleman is an OC and he’s kind of a backstabbing, neurotic bad guy. What’s missing [aside from the clothes, appropriate proportions, talent and a background] are a peppering of scars to complete his McNasty look. I should probably give him a bloody nose. He tends to get hit a lot – and he deserves it too – but it would knock him down a peg you know. Wipe that stupid smug expression of his ugly face. I mean, look at his stupid loungy pose and his stupid cancer-stick. Don’t you just want to shove him into a wood chipper? I know I do.

On a slightly less insane homicidal aggressive note, here’s a WIP that’s not really a WIP because it has no bearing on anything; the flats aren’t even right. I just liked how symmetrical it looked I guess. To be honest, I’m not really sure why I saved the image at all. But what can you can do?

I’ve made a terrifying, angry beast man surrounded by a beautiful, low opacity bouquet.

Some of you may have noticed I’ve finally put up banner images on both my site and my LJ. For the record, this is what my site banner looks like. The greyscale is just be temporary until I have time to colour the lines. It’s been ages since I’ve had an LJ though, and already 3 whole years [wow!] since I’ve had my site. Neither have ever had proper banners and it just couldn’t wait any longer.

Anyway, without further ado, I present to you my lines. When I’m done colouring this, I’ll upload a walk through so you can all see how crappy my sketches start out.

Today’s bust of the season features Zoë, a character you may have already seen in the comic. I had fun with the line weights, though I can see a few spots where I should have done better but all in all this isn’t a bad start to the new year. In the last post I talked about how this image is similar to the first picture I drew in 2010. At the same time, it’s still different enough that I don’t feel like I’m regressing. While Coraline certainly has more of a realistic touch, Zoë here has more of an ‘American’-styled lineart feel. Or at least I hope it’s American-ish, because I’m really trying to move away from the anime style I so easily sketch in.

The snowflakes are kind of gaudy looking I know, but I like to think that they make it less appealing to people who want to borrow my lines without crediting. Also, I figure that since I live in Winter Wonderland Canada, it’ll be snow season for at least another 3-5 months. That should give me enough time to draw up a new spring banner. This drawing too didn’t end up at all how I planned. Originally there were no flowers. Originally this was supposed to be a simple, quick and dirty, black haired girl for me to practice inking. It became Zoë when I started getting a little creative with my lines up in the hair. On the bright side, in changing up the character, I’ve decided to add some details to liven up her face in canon. Zoë will now have a piercing – she takes out for work [so no retcon needed hahah] – and handful of beauty marks sprinkled all over. Her chin is expected to be the most square of all my lady SP characters too.

It’s still January, so that means the new year’s still new.

I’m back for another semester at commerce school and not yet behind in anything, so the horizon is bright and inviting. For me, there’s still this hopeful feeling permeating every single day. You can be productive, I’m telling myself, and better yet, I’m believing it.

Wowee, it is another year and gosh – for better or worse – it sure was an interesting one. I owe a lot of people a lot of things art/fic wise, but I’m taking a break from that to-do list to post a little update on one of the things I’m working on. I’ll soon put up a post about what’s new with me this shiny new year and will work at including all the pictures I meant to post last year but didn’t.

Anyway, on a much more visually interesting note, here are my spot tests for some lines I’m colouring for my pal Mado. She’s another WAY AWESOME artist I know, who has a great grasp of humor and knows how to build really unique OCs. Here’s my WIP of her bloke wearing only some base colours, hypothetical shadowing and a sprinkle of bruises. Also, man alive, but I sure do need to brush up on my grasp of anatomy. >.>

This is the first stage of most of my colour jobs and the sort of rough work I’d show a hypothetical client to get feedback on composition, colour choice, etc. It’s always good to know before you get too far into an image whether you’ve botched up something, and this saves a lot of time and stress for everyone. It also proves you’re working on whatever you’ve said you would and sets people more at ease.

With Mado’s permission, I’ll post the finished image.

Starting off the new year with fabulous collaborations with fabulous people, is pretty damn fabulous. I love you guys.

EDIT:

Mado mentioned that Seven here needed a more aquatic skin texture, so here’s the change:

It’s barely noticeable unless you put the textureless version beside the new textured version; then you see what an improvement you get. The moral of the story is: talk to your clients / buddies all the damn time about everything. It makes you make better stuff.
