I am so partied out this weekend, Blog. But fear not, I didn’t forget my promise to you. I’d NEVER forget my promises to you. Anyway, here are  some closeups of my favourite portions of that commision from the last post. I learned and experimented a lot with not just line weights but also trying to add the feeling of texture to my inks too.

For example, I liked the way I did the hair on Chris’s forearms here, and I’m pretty fond of how I did his head-hair too. Also, I’m kind of liking the little crow’s feet I gave him, and the way his stubble fades off into his skin. (That can’t possibly be the right way to describe that)

Under the cut is the step-by-step and a couple other choice closeups. What’s that? Hey now, Blog, watch yourself. There is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with being proud of myself and some of the things I’ve done. If anything, you should me proud of me.

Blog, you know how I have that bad habit and sometimes when when people hold still long enough, I accidentally draw all over them? Well, it happened again.  There’s more photos under the cut.

Hey, uh, Blog… there’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you. Y’see, me and the guys couldn’t help but notice that lately you’ve gotten this … propensity of posting pics of … dudes with mangled faces. And while it’s all fine and good, and totally normal for everyone to have a thing, well…. we’re getting a little worried about you. This is beginning to look a bit like you’ve got a problem…

No, Blog, No. Put down the ax, Blog. Just put it down and step away from the– NO, BLOG, NO.
NO.

NO.

In other news, I think I really like Transformers now. So here’s a couple awkward sketches of a really sweet, mild mannered robot psychologist who accidentally gets his head blown off, in a really tragic turn of events from a really fabulous comic. I’ve already got a coloured version in the works, but note to self: fix this bloke’s eyes and give the poor guy some shoulders or something. Alas, I guess this is what happens when you sketch in pen, what with that whole no-erase quality it’s got going on. You live and you learn, I guess. TOO BAD I DON’T SEEM TO EVER LEARN.

You know what, Blog? I know you really like that look, but you’ve been wearing that same thing since June 10th and honestly, you’re making me a little uncomfortable. Time to change out of that and put on something new. Or at least something that doesn’t look that gross. Or smell… I mean really, Blog. Have you even put that in the laundry at all… you know what? Forget I asked.

What I’m trying to say here is that I’ve gotten tired of looking at that sad colour-spot-test thing that’s been haunting my most recent post page. Also, I’m embarrassed by how awkward it is, even if it is just a WIP.  So to flush out the bad, here’s the much nicer looking sketchy until I have time to actually colour this properly.

I also mentioned in the last post that I was waffling between making Rinzler tall or short. I wasn’t joking about having gotten a more refined sketch of tiny!Rinzler, and while he looks fine (barring a few anatomy issues I’ll have to fix up) he just doesn’t look as striking as tall!Rinzler. Also, with Uprsing’s crazy stretched out insanely awkwardly tall anatomy going on, maybe tall is the right way to go? Even though this picture is dated July 2011, I’m so slow at art, that by now, there’s already been at least 3+ similar themed Tron fanarts floating around. I’ll admit I’ve been a little nervous to continue working on this for fear that someone’ll jump out of a bush and call me a dreaded ‘idea-stealer.’ What I think I need to do here, Blog, is remind myself that ALL ideas have already been done, flip my hair over my shoulder, and just do what I want. I still might need you to hold my hand though, Blog. You know, for reasons.

PS: that red elbow-y sort of thing that’s going on in the left side there was my sketch for a matching Ram who I’d also put in a suit. These two were supposed to be based off an AU from the 60′s where they were both varying degrees of detectives. Unfortunately that endeavour kind of lost steam, so it’ll just be Rinzler in the end that’ll get completed. Once upon a time, I had a Clu in there too. Oh well, at least I’ve a better chance of finishing this now.

Hey Blog, this is what you get for taking forever at doing your art. Sure, “concentrate on real life,” they said, “it’ll be a good, idea” they said; “you’ll thank us later when you’re able to pay your bills.” Yeah, well, THANKS FOR NOTHING, Practical Advice. You get all tangled up with school, work, and sig figs, and next thing you know a new television show has come out, and unless you can finagle your picture done before a couple more canon reveals, all your fanwork won’t make any sense.

That’s what you get for trying to take care of business, Blog. Leave it to you to take care of exactly the wrong business.

And speaking of business, let’s talk funny business. Namely the funny business of Bruce Boxleitner be Tron be Rinzler be Anis Cheurfa and their distinctly wavering heights. Originally I was going to draw short Legacy Rinzler, but the sketch came out 80′s Tron tall. I’ve got a more refined sketch of the bloke with a smaller stature, but given how lanky everyone is in Uprising (which I still haven’t watched) I wonder if I should retool this guy to be somewhat less short?

Oh hey Blog, looks like my life is this continuous cycle of  never having time to do art but when I do, then having to send off my glitchy computers for fixing. And by fixing I mean the tech people will give it a cursory look over and then shake their heads sadly. But enough about me, Blog, let’s talk about you.

I can’t help but notice that your latest entry (this) is sporting a new WIP. I also can’t help but notice that it was for a picture you said you’d do for someone, what, roughly two years ago? Anyway, nice to see you’re still at that. Even if, you know, your timing is kind of embarrassingly  horrible.

Remember the sketch I did back here?

Well here are the two main colour schemes I’m waffling between. Do I pick creepy, pale and sickly looking? Or creepy and ethically ambiguous? I’m torn between the two, but leaning more towards Pasty there on the right, since Primeverse Starscream is the palest and greyest of all mechs in the series so far.

Ps: gosh I’m on the edge of my seat with this show, and wondering how they’re going to end up balancing Starscream’s badass moments with his overwhelming patheticness.

Anyway, I could sure do with a vote on what colours looks best.

What it says on the tin. I accidentally saved a .PNG file over my working .PSD file, and now I’ve effectively got to paint over this, or start anew. Ah well, I will persevere for my art! Or you know, for someone else’s art. Namely that someone else is the ever fabulous infiniteviking who graciously let me slap some colours onto her already stunning lineart. I’m kind of down about losing all the work I’d done on this, but eh, what can you do? C’est la vie n’est-ce pas?

This is going to be part of an ADVENT CALENDAR EVENT I’m hosting, where every day of March for the first 11 days (or possibly the first 30 days if I can manage) I’m going to upload/gift a fandom related thing to someone (and in some cases, just straight up mail some lucky SOBs some tangible goods). Fandoms are going to be Tron and Transformers almost exclusively.  The above image is part of one person’s gift, and I’m hoping I can pretty it up (and re-relearn photoshop in the precess since idekwtf I’m doing at this point) in order to make it an acceptable present … since, y’know, I didn’t even do half the work.

I am dying on my feet tired today and I’m not entirely sure why. Yesterday was super busy and quite an adventure with the dangerous as hell roads, (no, my mistake; when I said “roads,” I really meant ICY CHASMS OF DEATH) the business meetings, the business dinner, the business lunch, the parties and the mint tour, but these usually don’t tire me out this much even in conjunction. Furthermore, I’m pretty sure I went to sleep yesterday, so I have no right be this fatigued. Ah well, it’ll stay a mystery I guess.

Arble Garble, but I have so much stuff I need to get done this weekend and it’s already 1 AM. So instead of doing the smart thing like studying, working or getting me to bed, I’m going to prove I’m not a fibber.

I keep telling people I like photography and have been meaning to post up some of my experiments in the field for, well, years now. So, here goes. Links go to my new photography account on Deviant art.

It’s still January, so that means the new year’s still new.

I’m back for another semester at commerce school and not yet behind in anything, so the horizon is bright and inviting. For me, there’s still this hopeful feeling permeating every single day. You can be productive, I’m telling myself, and better yet, I’m believing it.

Paint Chat

Nov. 22nd, 2008 05:12 am
wist: (Default)

So last night I had the bright idea of trying a paint chat for the first time with some pretty stellar people.  I hadn’t done any digital art since the summer and guess what I learned? Boy do I SUCK. It was so hard getting into the groove again. And I still don’t know what half the buttons on the board do.

Anyway here are a few progression images as I was finishing up my little monstrosity sketcher-thingy-McDoodle. If you squint, you can almost tell I made the picture look a little better than what I started with. I only wish I had taken a screen shot when I was just beginning, because Oh my Goodness, what I had drawn was like the above… but only a thousand times more shoddy.

And this is the final paint chat window. Ya, I know, I have a lot of practice ahead of me. As you can see everything is in Japanese and I have no idea what I am doing at all time.

I did this stuff here: http://www.takamin.com/oekakichat/user/oekakichat3.php?userid=263191

(If Java doesn’t work in firefox, I’d try IE before doing any major unistalling etc etc)

I haven’t been very active here on my blog for the last week, but I plan to remedy this.

Today I’m posting random WIPs and sketches from around September of this year –so new-ish stuff.

My shoe. I forgot I needed to have a still life drawn for class which was due in about 8 minutes. Whipped this thing up in  6. Graphite stick? (red filter on gimp because it was boring.)

Just a warm up sketch done in class. Wished I had had more time to work on this, I liked where it was going. Graphite stick again, probably.

~~~
Ok, now for the naked people. These are just linearts, no shading was allowed.
My first time drawing live nudes. It was pretty fun, this guy is apparently the city’s best model. Pretty shoddy camera photos though. All gesture drawings. Various materials. The last full body picture is probably my favorite; it was around here that I started getting into the swing of the exercise.
Second model, still line arts,  first woman model. This lady had a whole bunch of body modifications (that I didn’t draw): decorative scarring, tattoos and piercings. She did have some pretty awesome hair though.
First model again. I liked the way I managed to use just lines and still describe plane shifts on the body.
sketch
Just a quick oil pastel sketch. First time using the medium.  Did not turn out how I had planned, but still alright for a first try. I like the colors. It was supposed to be Gabby, but I don’t know what happened.
Shoddy scan,  cause the image is in my sketchbook and I couldn’t be bothered to make an effort. … And yes,  that is seran wrap on the picture.
It’s 3: 22 in the morning as I post this, and I’m sure I will regret the picture when I look at it again.
Uploading some sketches I did with my kiddie markers and crayons.
Here we have a blue cat, Philip the prince of Diamonds and Her Royal Highness The Queen of Diamolubs. (That last word should be subject to change – but isn’t.)
These were done with markers from way back when I was just a youngin’, with more teeth than markers.
And here we have a crayon sketch of a mermaid. I have this urge to do something with crayons now. I miss my crayons.
Last valentines I made a quick 15 minute ms paint sketch for the metaphorical altiel to my cor. The purple dude up there is the improved version as the image itself was pretty cruddy, I have to admit. I finally was able to draw the guy’s hair properly and I couldn’t allow the picture to just sit around looking horrid so I had to fix it a little.
I also decided to keep up the lame sketch upload and include another (older and therefore the grimy-ness is excusable ).
