While I try to fend off falling into some bad habits of mine, I’ve been working on and off on this new Fall of Cybertron Shockwave picture.  Decided to try painting without a lineart this time because I’d hoped it would end up being a faster process. So far, I’m not sure about that.

Geez, this guy’s arms are going to be a nightmare to render. I’m not looking forward to that.

Oh well, we’ll have to see how this goes. I trust you’ll support me in this endeavour, Blog? (PS: You had better.)

All of this is awkward repost from my tumblr:

Hey Tumblr,
Remember when I had other fandoms besides Transformers? Yeah, me neither. However, it turns out other people do. I told Plurk I'd work on some fanart for the first (couple) fandom(s) of mine people listed and this was one of them.

Blame Sharn and Expo for this. Also Winzler. In fact, this WIP is only uploaded because Winzler told me to.

ANYWAY, ENJOY YOUR NOT-TERRIBLY-ORIGINAL fanart. The ghost is angry because they left candy all over the floor.

More WIPS, and this time from the expected fandom. Here's the second set from that Plurk draw I did, where I said I'd make some fanart for the first fandom(s) listed.
  1. Drift from MTMTE with something to show you.
  2.
  3. This was for a game where we (me and my mates) were supposed to colour over this Fall of Cybertron Shockwave toy for lighting practice and then show each other... Turns out that in the wee hours of the morning, I have really poor reading comprehension and at some point between 2 and 3 AM ... the rules got lost and I just started making shit up.
  4.
  5. Oops.
I plan to finish both of these. ... And oh look, it is 1: 50 AM over here, and I bet, if I were to follow historical trends... that I'm not making too much sense right now. OH WELL. TOO BAD. If I have to suffer looking at these WIPs on my desktop SO DO YOU.

I'm sorry.

Well, you know the drill by now, Blog. I get one image done, and then I find a whole bunch more on an old external hardrive that are tantalizing work in progresses. What? Don’t look at me like that. You know how I strive — often to counter-intuitive heights — for the feeling of completion and hard drive tidiness.  Besides, how am I expected to resist  something where half the work is already done for me?

I think I did this linework’ two years ago as part of a set. This is my Cheerleading Fairy of Optimism. She was probably supposed to have wings, but it’s very possible I was overdosing on cutesy girly imagery at the time, and just couldn’t bring myself to include them in the final ‘inks’.  I’d forgotten I’d ever drawn hair like that, and it’s kinda nice. Anyway, I’m hoping that putting this little lady up on the Blog will motivate me to A) finish her B) finish the ugly-ass sketch of her partner. By the way, the absurd idea of a ‘Cheerleading Optimist Fairy’ came from a tiny comic I’d done years and years and years ago over here.

Sob, Blog. Why can’t the hard parts be done by other people? Anatomy is so difficult and I don’t wannaaaa. You finish the sketch, Blog, I just want to colour.

Yeah, okay, I’ll stop whining and go get things done. Glad we had this talk. You’re the best.

+1 image to the work in progress category.

I believe that it’s only proper manners to let your commissioner know how their commission is progressing.  This extends to anything I’m doing of commission quality.

Bloke’s nearly done, I’m thinking. Hooray.

And don’t worry, Blog, I haven’t forgotten you. But school’s starting, and things’ll be a little frantic for a bit.

Rung, honey, baby bolts, you should uh, really see somebody about those head insides of yours that are kind of… falling out your outsides.

And once again we see my attempt to learn coloured cellshading failing horribly. Also, where did that upper torso come from? That wasn’t supposed to be there either…

Dear hands,

Please start doing what I want you to.

Thanks.

Love,
MmeJack

Which is to say, I don’t know anything.

Help.
Help.
What am I doing?

Help.

I don’t know what I’m doing.

To be fair though, I am pretty ace at backgrounds as you can clearly see.

Hey, uh, Blog… there’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you. Y’see, me and the guys couldn’t help but notice that lately you’ve gotten this … propensity of posting pics of … dudes with mangled faces. And while it’s all fine and good, and totally normal for everyone to have a thing, well…. we’re getting a little worried about you. This is beginning to look a bit like you’ve got a problem…

No, Blog, No. Put down the ax, Blog. Just put it down and step away from the– NO, BLOG, NO.
NO.

NO.

In other news, I think I really like Transformers now. So here’s a couple awkward sketches of a really sweet, mild mannered robot psychologist who accidentally gets his head blown off, in a really tragic turn of events from a really fabulous comic. I’ve already got a coloured version in the works, but note to self: fix this bloke’s eyes and give the poor guy some shoulders or something. Alas, I guess this is what happens when you sketch in pen, what with that whole no-erase quality it’s got going on. You live and you learn, I guess. TOO BAD I DON’T SEEM TO EVER LEARN.

You know what, Blog? I know you really like that look, but you’ve been wearing that same thing since June 10th and honestly, you’re making me a little uncomfortable. Time to change out of that and put on something new. Or at least something that doesn’t look that gross. Or smell… I mean really, Blog. Have you even put that in the laundry at all… you know what? Forget I asked.

What I’m trying to say here is that I’ve gotten tired of looking at that sad colour-spot-test thing that’s been haunting my most recent post page. Also, I’m embarrassed by how awkward it is, even if it is just a WIP.  So to flush out the bad, here’s the much nicer looking sketchy until I have time to actually colour this properly.

I also mentioned in the last post that I was waffling between making Rinzler tall or short. I wasn’t joking about having gotten a more refined sketch of tiny!Rinzler, and while he looks fine (barring a few anatomy issues I’ll have to fix up) he just doesn’t look as striking as tall!Rinzler. Also, with Uprsing’s crazy stretched out insanely awkwardly tall anatomy going on, maybe tall is the right way to go? Even though this picture is dated July 2011, I’m so slow at art, that by now, there’s already been at least 3+ similar themed Tron fanarts floating around. I’ll admit I’ve been a little nervous to continue working on this for fear that someone’ll jump out of a bush and call me a dreaded ‘idea-stealer.’ What I think I need to do here, Blog, is remind myself that ALL ideas have already been done, flip my hair over my shoulder, and just do what I want. I still might need you to hold my hand though, Blog. You know, for reasons.

PS: that red elbow-y sort of thing that’s going on in the left side there was my sketch for a matching Ram who I’d also put in a suit. These two were supposed to be based off an AU from the 60′s where they were both varying degrees of detectives. Unfortunately that endeavour kind of lost steam, so it’ll just be Rinzler in the end that’ll get completed. Once upon a time, I had a Clu in there too. Oh well, at least I’ve a better chance of finishing this now.

Hey Blog, this is what you get for taking forever at doing your art. Sure, “concentrate on real life,” they said, “it’ll be a good, idea” they said; “you’ll thank us later when you’re able to pay your bills.” Yeah, well, THANKS FOR NOTHING, Practical Advice. You get all tangled up with school, work, and sig figs, and next thing you know a new television show has come out, and unless you can finagle your picture done before a couple more canon reveals, all your fanwork won’t make any sense.

That’s what you get for trying to take care of business, Blog. Leave it to you to take care of exactly the wrong business.

And speaking of business, let’s talk funny business. Namely the funny business of Bruce Boxleitner be Tron be Rinzler be Anis Cheurfa and their distinctly wavering heights. Originally I was going to draw short Legacy Rinzler, but the sketch came out 80′s Tron tall. I’ve got a more refined sketch of the bloke with a smaller stature, but given how lanky everyone is in Uprising (which I still haven’t watched) I wonder if I should retool this guy to be somewhat less short?

Oh hey Blog, looks like my life is this continuous cycle of  never having time to do art but when I do, then having to send off my glitchy computers for fixing. And by fixing I mean the tech people will give it a cursory look over and then shake their heads sadly. But enough about me, Blog, let’s talk about you.

I can’t help but notice that your latest entry (this) is sporting a new WIP. I also can’t help but notice that it was for a picture you said you’d do for someone, what, roughly two years ago? Anyway, nice to see you’re still at that. Even if, you know, your timing is kind of embarrassingly  horrible.

Remember the sketch I did back here?

Well here are the two main colour schemes I’m waffling between. Do I pick creepy, pale and sickly looking? Or creepy and ethically ambiguous? I’m torn between the two, but leaning more towards Pasty there on the right, since Primeverse Starscream is the palest and greyest of all mechs in the series so far.

Ps: gosh I’m on the edge of my seat with this show, and wondering how they’re going to end up balancing Starscream’s badass moments with his overwhelming patheticness.

Anyway, I could sure do with a vote on what colours looks best.

Or maybe we all just like Loud Noises, I dunno.

Oh look, a picture of a giant robot who is neither very giant NOR a robot. Welp, so much for my first Transformers fanart being very true to the series. Anyway, trying my hand at drawing Primeverse Starscream as a human because no matter how hard it is to render people, they’re still easier than big metal alien men. Humans  in general also require less rulers to draw, and let’s not even talk about me and vehicles (or vehicle-people for that matter).

Other people!formers I ‘ve got on the go right now include:

  • Slipstream (TFA)
  • Megatron
  •  Bumblebee
  •  Arcee
  • Soundwave
  • Knock Out
  • Breakdown
  • Airachnid

I wanted to draw Ratchet (and still might if I can think of an outfit for him) but Bulkhead, and Optimus are giving me trouble. Optimus especially since his helmet looks like a baseball cap and his … robot goatee and weird… three lines of ‘hair’ peeking out from under his ‘hat’ are all kind of tough to translate  into a person in my style.

By the way, I do have an entire outfit an actual pose that extends below Starscream’s neck but I’m currently caught up in trying to decide between two potential colour schemes. The spot colours are on tumblr, so I’ll upload them here pretty soon too.

I kind of feel like a tool with that last WIP sitting at the top of my blog since I’ve been working on this image every single day after posting that last entry. While my computer’s in for repairs I’m forced to use a friend’s, but I can only do so for 20 minute stints at a time. It’s rough ’cause I just want to get this done so I can finally mail it off. On the bright side I’m at the home stretch now, and the current file is sitting pretty much 97% done. Didn’t have that file on hand, so I’m just throwing this one up here. When I was at this stage it was probably around 78 % done.

Continuing the adventure of trying to quickly finish a drawing using only the pen tool and gradients. And what an adventure it is — an adventure in not shoving my hands into a blender! I can’t tell if it’s the fact that I only get to work on this ugly baby of mine toward 1 AM (since I need to borrow a photoshop capable computer — and it is hardly capable at that), or if it’s the unintuitive practice of using only the pen/gradient tool, or the most likely scenario; my sheer fumbly fail-ness that is making this so difficult. But whatever it is, this image — which was supposed to be a speedily done thing — is taking forever.

It certainly doesn’t help that I can’t figure out underwater lighting nor volume. Seriously, a shark should not be this difficult to map planes of light on. Sharks don’t even have that many wobbly, sticky-outy, finangly parts. I dunno what my problem is. (Like always, sleep dep. is an industry standard acceptable answer).

Oh, and PS: can you tell it is 5 AM? Because I can. I can just feel my coherency jumping out a window. Anyway, updated my WIP gallery with this guy, whined a bit, and gave you a quick touch base, my dear Blog. Now it’s off to bed with me, so we can have another lovely day full of awkward English, typos, and regrets tomorrow! Goodnight, my dear!

What it says on the tin. I accidentally saved a .PNG file over my working .PSD file, and now I’ve effectively got to paint over this, or start anew. Ah well, I will persevere for my art! Or you know, for someone else’s art. Namely that someone else is the ever fabulous infiniteviking who graciously let me slap some colours onto her already stunning lineart. I’m kind of down about losing all the work I’d done on this, but eh, what can you do? C’est la vie n’est-ce pas?

This is going to be part of an ADVENT CALENDAR EVENT I’m hosting, where every day of March for the first 11 days (or possibly the first 30 days if I can manage) I’m going to upload/gift a fandom related thing to someone (and in some cases, just straight up mail some lucky SOBs some tangible goods). Fandoms are going to be Tron and Transformers almost exclusively.  The above image is part of one person’s gift, and I’m hoping I can pretty it up (and re-relearn photoshop in the precess since idekwtf I’m doing at this point) in order to make it an acceptable present … since, y’know, I didn’t even do half the work.

I’m updating my blog and it is 2 in the morning. Surprise, surprise.

It’s now the next day and I’ve forgotten to publish my last night late night post. Surprise. Surprise.

In any case, now that I’m done that one tegaki adventure, I’m free to finish the other things I owe other people. This includes my colouring job on gimpy Shark Man here.

You might remember him from an earlier post, but I just wanted to update where I am on this guy. I also wanted to show the difference between my spot colours and my more finalized version(s).

I still need to add a second level of shadow to the skin, and I’m planning to add the volume to the scar tissue on another layer, so that’s why they still look kind of flat. I also need to do some skin highlights, but will probably keep that simple since I’m working with a low light environment.

The shadows are just one colour right now by the way, so I wonder if this is cell shading? Is it? I had wanted to do cell shading originally, but I’m not entirely sure if I got it right. Man, if I were a real artist I bet I would know these fancy definitions.

I gotta say too, that I tackled the skin first, not just because it helped me get a better idea of the light source, but also because looking up references on how to paint bruises/cuts/scar tissue got me some pretty terrifying nightmare fuel pictures. Edit: That might explain my actual nightmares last night. But I digress. The amount of inflation pornography that cropped up was surprising too.

And while I don’t have the greatest working knowledge of male any words anatomy and decided to MAKE IT UP AS I WENT, I really like how this turned out. There’s still a few shading inconsistencies I need to iron out, but this’s the first time I’ve tried rendering “realistic-ish” muscle mass and the final product isn’t half bad looking imho. I think a lot of the ease to which this happened is thanks to Mado’s ability to put lines in all the right places though. It’s worth noting too, that this character is supposed to have very smooth, almost dolphin-like skin, so that explains why my shadings so smooth looking.

Anyway, the way I see it, I can either now go do some homework or try to finish the skin for this guy. Guess which one I’m choosing? [winky-face-emote here]

PS: I’ve started an art reference tumblr. More on that later.

PPS: Today’s Pictures for Sad Children comic was AMAZING. So out of the blue, unexpected and synonymous with “awesome.”

I was going to do some homework and then play some Mass Effect – not necessarily in that order – when my Xbox circle went three parts red. I decided to post some WIPs I’m working on and off on, instead.

Focus on the “off” part of that last sentence. Bah, I wish I had the time to work on this one more.

Started this last year, you can see the first WIP I did over here. You’ll notice the quality didn’t improve but the picture got bigger. Anyway, this gentleman is an OC and he’s kind of a backstabbing, neurotic bad guy. What’s missing [aside from the clothes, appropriate proportions, talent and a background] are a peppering of scars to complete his McNasty look. I should probably give him a bloody nose. He tends to get hit a lot – and he deserves it too – but it would knock him down a peg you know. Wipe that stupid smug expression of his ugly face. I mean, look at his stupid loungy pose and his stupid cancer-stick. Don’t you just want to shove him into a wood chipper? I know I do.

On a slightly less insane homicidal aggressive note, here’s a WIP that’s not really a WIP because it has no bearing on anything; the flats aren’t even right. I just liked how symmetrical it looked I guess. To be honest, I’m not really sure why I saved the image at all. But what can you can do?

I’ve made a terrifying, angry beast man surrounded by a beautiful, low opacity bouquet.

Some of you may have noticed I’ve finally put up banner images on both my site and my LJ. For the record, this is what my site banner looks like. The greyscale is just be temporary until I have time to colour the lines. It’s been ages since I’ve had an LJ though, and already 3 whole years [wow!] since I’ve had my site. Neither have ever had proper banners and it just couldn’t wait any longer.

Anyway, without further ado, I present to you my lines. When I’m done colouring this, I’ll upload a walk through so you can all see how crappy my sketches start out.

Today’s bust of the season features Zoë, a character you may have already seen in the comic. I had fun with the line weights, though I can see a few spots where I should have done better but all in all this isn’t a bad start to the new year. In the last post I talked about how this image is similar to the first picture I drew in 2010. At the same time, it’s still different enough that I don’t feel like I’m regressing. While Coraline certainly has more of a realistic touch, Zoë here has more of an ‘American’-styled lineart feel. Or at least I hope it’s American-ish, because I’m really trying to move away from the anime style I so easily sketch in.

The snowflakes are kind of gaudy looking I know, but I like to think that they make it less appealing to people who want to borrow my lines without crediting. Also, I figure that since I live in Winter Wonderland Canada, it’ll be snow season for at least another 3-5 months. That should give me enough time to draw up a new spring banner. This drawing too didn’t end up at all how I planned. Originally there were no flowers. Originally this was supposed to be a simple, quick and dirty, black haired girl for me to practice inking. It became Zoë when I started getting a little creative with my lines up in the hair. On the bright side, in changing up the character, I’ve decided to add some details to liven up her face in canon. Zoë will now have a piercing – she takes out for work [so no retcon needed hahah] – and handful of beauty marks sprinkled all over. Her chin is expected to be the most square of all my lady SP characters too.

It’s still January, so that means the new year’s still new.

I’m back for another semester at commerce school and not yet behind in anything, so the horizon is bright and inviting. For me, there’s still this hopeful feeling permeating every single day. You can be productive, I’m telling myself, and better yet, I’m believing it.

Wowee, it is another year and gosh – for better or worse – it sure was an interesting one. I owe a lot of people a lot of things art/fic wise, but I’m taking a break from that to-do list to post a little update on one of the things I’m working on. I’ll soon put up a post about what’s new with me this shiny new year and will work at including all the pictures I meant to post last year but didn’t.

Anyway, on a much more visually interesting note, here are my spot tests for some lines I’m colouring for my pal Mado. She’s another WAY AWESOME artist I know, who has a great grasp of humor and knows how to build really unique OCs. Here’s my WIP of her bloke wearing only some base colours, hypothetical shadowing and a sprinkle of bruises. Also, man alive, but I sure do need to brush up on my grasp of anatomy. >.>

This is the first stage of most of my colour jobs and the sort of rough work I’d show a hypothetical client to get feedback on composition, colour choice, etc. It’s always good to know before you get too far into an image whether you’ve botched up something, and this saves a lot of time and stress for everyone. It also proves you’re working on whatever you’ve said you would and sets people more at ease.

With Mado’s permission, I’ll post the finished image.

Starting off the new year with fabulous collaborations with fabulous people, is pretty damn fabulous. I love you guys.

EDIT:

Mado mentioned that Seven here needed a more aquatic skin texture, so here’s the change:

It’s barely noticeable unless you put the textureless version beside the new textured version; then you see what an improvement you get. The moral of the story is: talk to your clients / buddies all the damn time about everything. It makes you make better stuff.
