Well, you know the drill by now, Blog. I get one image done, and then I find a whole bunch more on an old external hardrive that are tantalizing work in progresses. What? Don’t look at me like that. You know how I strive — often to counter-intuitive heights — for the feeling of completion and hard drive tidiness. Besides, how am I expected to resist something where half the work is already done for me?
I think I did this linework’ two years ago as part of a set. This is my Cheerleading Fairy of Optimism. She was probably supposed to have wings, but it’s very possible I was overdosing on cutesy girly imagery at the time, and just couldn’t bring myself to include them in the final ‘inks’. I’d forgotten I’d ever drawn hair like that, and it’s kinda nice. Anyway, I’m hoping that putting this little lady up on the Blog will motivate me to A) finish her B) finish the ugly-ass sketch of her partner. By the way, the absurd idea of a ‘Cheerleading Optimist Fairy’ came from a tiny comic I’d done years and years and years ago over here.
Sob, Blog. Why can’t the hard parts be done by other people? Anatomy is so difficult and I don’t wannaaaa. You finish the sketch, Blog, I just want to colour.
Yeah, okay, I’ll stop whining and go get things done. Glad we had this talk. You’re the best.

I believe that it’s only proper manners to let your commissioner know how their commission is progressing. This extends to anything I’m doing of commission quality.

Y’see, me and the guys couldn’t help but notice that lately you’ve gotten this … propensity of posting pics of … dudes with mangled faces. And while it’s all fine and good, and totally normal for everyone to have a thing, well…. we’re getting a little worried about you. This is beginning to look a bit like you’ve got a problem…

In other news, I think I really like Transformers now. So here’s a couple awkward sketches of a really sweet, mild mannered robot psychologist who accidentally gets his head blown off, in a really tragic turn of events from a really fabulous comic. I’ve already got a coloured version in the works, but note to self: fix this bloke’s eyes and give the poor guy some shoulders or something. Alas, I guess this is what happens when you sketch in pen, what with that whole no-erase quality it’s got going on. You live and you learn, I guess. TOO BAD I DON’T SEEM TO EVER LEARN.

You know what, Blog? I know you really like that look, but you’ve been wearing that same thing since June 10th and honestly, you’re making me a little uncomfortable. Time to change out of that and put on something new. Or at least something that doesn’t look that gross. Or smell… I mean really, Blog. Have you even put that in the laundry at all… you know what? Forget I asked.
What I’m trying to say here is that I’ve gotten tired of looking at that sad colour-spot-test thing that’s been haunting my most recent post page. Also, I’m embarrassed by how awkward it is, even if it is just a WIP. So to flush out the bad, here’s the much nicer looking sketchy until I have time to actually colour this properly.
I also mentioned in the last post that I was waffling between making Rinzler tall or short. I wasn’t joking about having gotten a more refined sketch of tiny!Rinzler, and while he looks fine (barring a few anatomy issues I’ll have to fix up) he just doesn’t look as striking as tall!Rinzler. Also, with Uprsing’s crazy stretched out insanely awkwardly tall anatomy going on, maybe tall is the right way to go? Even though this picture is dated July 2011, I’m so slow at art, that by now, there’s already been at least 3+ similar themed Tron fanarts floating around. I’ll admit I’ve been a little nervous to continue working on this for fear that someone’ll jump out of a bush and call me a dreaded ‘idea-stealer.’ What I think I need to do here, Blog, is remind myself that ALL ideas have already been done, flip my hair over my shoulder, and just do what I want. I still might need you to hold my hand though, Blog. You know, for reasons.
PS: that red elbow-y sort of thing that’s going on in the left side there was my sketch for a matching Ram who I’d also put in a suit. These two were supposed to be based off an AU from the 60′s where they were both varying degrees of detectives. Unfortunately that endeavour kind of lost steam, so it’ll just be Rinzler in the end that’ll get completed. Once upon a time, I had a Clu in there too. Oh well, at least I’ve a better chance of finishing this now.

Whittling down my To Do List

Oh hey Blog, looks like my life is this continuous cycle of never having time to do art but when I do, then having to send off my glitchy computers for fixing. And by fixing I mean the tech people will give it a cursory look over and then shake their heads sadly. But enough about me, Blog, let’s talk about you.
I can’t help but notice that your latest entry (this) is sporting a new WIP. I also can’t help but notice that it was for a picture you said you’d do for someone, what, roughly two years ago? Anyway, nice to see you’re still at that. Even if, you know, your timing is kind of embarrassingly horrible.
Or maybe we all just like Loud Noises, I dunno.
Oh look, a picture of a giant robot who is neither very giant NOR a robot. Welp, so much for my first Transformers fanart being very true to the series. Anyway, trying my hand at drawing Primeverse Starscream as a human because no matter how hard it is to render people, they’re still easier than big metal alien men. Humans in general also require less rulers to draw, and let’s not even talk about me and vehicles (or vehicle-people for that matter).

I wanted to draw Ratchet (and still might if I can think of an outfit for him) but Bulkhead, and Optimus are giving me trouble. Optimus especially since his helmet looks like a baseball cap and his … robot goatee and weird… three lines of ‘hair’ peeking out from under his ‘hat’ are all kind of tough to translate into a person in my style.
By the way, I do have an entire outfit an actual pose that extends below Starscream’s neck but I’m currently caught up in trying to decide between two potential colour schemes. The spot colours are on tumblr, so I’ll upload them here pretty soon too.
First Drawing of the New Year
Jan. 22nd, 2011 04:02 amSome of you may have noticed I’ve finally put up banner images on both my site and my LJ. For the record, this is what my site banner looks like. The greyscale is just be temporary until I have time to colour the lines. It’s been ages since I’ve had an LJ though, and already 3 whole years [wow!] since I’ve had my site. Neither have ever had proper banners and it just couldn’t wait any longer.
Anyway, without further ado, I present to you my lines. When I’m done colouring this, I’ll upload a walk through so you can all see how crappy my sketches start out.
Today’s bust of the season features Zoë, a character you may have already seen in the comic. I had fun with the line weights, though I can see a few spots where I should have done better but all in all this isn’t a bad start to the new year. In the last post I talked about how this image is similar to the first picture I drew in 2010. At the same time, it’s still different enough that I don’t feel like I’m regressing. While Coraline certainly has more of a realistic touch, Zoë here has more of an ‘American’-styled lineart feel. Or at least I hope it’s American-ish, because I’m really trying to move away from the anime style I so easily sketch in.
The snowflakes are kind of gaudy looking I know, but I like to think that they make it less appealing to people who want to borrow my lines without crediting. Also, I figure that since I live in Winter Wonderland Canada, it’ll be snow season for at least another 3-5 months. That should give me enough time to draw up a new spring banner. This drawing too didn’t end up at all how I planned. Originally there were no flowers. Originally this was supposed to be a simple, quick and dirty, black haired girl for me to practice inking. It became Zoë when I started getting a little creative with my lines up in the hair. On the bright side, in changing up the character, I’ve decided to add some details to liven up her face in canon. Zoë will now have a piercing – she takes out for work [so no retcon needed hahah] – and handful of beauty marks sprinkled all over. Her chin is expected to be the most square of all my lady SP characters too.
